The China Program on Democratic Standards
Wang Zhongru
Abstract: The standards for judging whether a political system is democratic are a basic prerequisite for the development of democratic politics. Multi-party competition, separation of powers and free elections are the democratic standards set by the US-led Western countries based on their own national conditions, but they are not universally applicable. Fully mobilizing the enthusiasm of the people and maintaining high efficiency and social stability is the basic standard Deng Xiaoping set for the socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics. On this basis, Xi Jinping proposes the eight criteria for evaluating whether a national political system is democratic, which are the institutionalization result of the CPC on the issue of democratic standards. The Chinese people are exploring for the development of democratic politics of the human society, and put forward a new China program, thus making their own unique contribution.
